Elementary Music Methods Practicum
I observed Christine Ballenger's expertise and then led a group of first graders through a fruit-based rhythm composition project. The students were handed pictures of fruit to arrange however they wanted. The syllables of the fruit names covered simple rhythms. After the students arranged their cards and practiced clapping their new compositions, they shared with the class so we could admire their creativity. (10 hours completed) |
Secondary Choral Methods Practicum
I utilized my collection of vocalises and led warm-ups for both Keri Hess-Bolte at Mandan High School and Erin Weichel at Shiloh Christian Middle School. At Shiloh, I was able to see how young groups prepare for musicals as they choreographed and rehearsed Annie. At Mandan, I achieved a more hands-on experience as I was able to sing with the choirs after warm-ups and helped Ms. Hess-Bolte with grading the students' music theory tests. (10 hours completed) |
Secondary Instrumental Methods Practicum
As a woodwind player, my instrumental practicums were where I felt that my teaching was the most consistent and engaging. I was able to lead a few sectionals for reed players at Watcher Middle School under Neil Tafelmeyer's direction . There, I used private instruction strategies I have built up after running my own studio for a while. For Mark Herold at Legacy, I was able to lead warm ups and conduct a mock Allstate audition with some of his students, acting as if I was the judge. I was able to see different students' reactions to the audition feeling; after always being on the other side of it, it opened up some new perspectives on to how I can approach my future students' mindsets. NDSP CHOIR
|
For the summer of 2019, I had the privilege of volunteering at the North Dakota State Penitentiary with their choir program. There, I used my secondary choral methods and personal choir rehearsal experiences to lead them through simple, yet engaging repertoire. Every day we did vocal warm ups, stretches, and rehearsed music they helped me pick. A lot of the repertoire was pop culture as it tended to be at an easier level and more engaging for everyone involved, no matter their past musical experiences. (15 hours completed) |
Private Studio Teaching
Since the fall of 2017, I have been running and out-of home own private studio where I teach oboe, flute, piano, and saxophone to students aging from about 6 to 14 years old. There, I have learned strategies on how to approach one on one time with students as well as achieving a stronger ability to diagnose problems in an individual's sound. (1-3 hours weekly) |
E-Sports Coaching
Video games is one of my passions, and I found a wonderful way to practice my teaching skills through coaching E-Sports as if they were part of any classroom or sports team. I have formed outlines of lesson plans and have created curriculum to teach lower-ranked players on how to improve at the game they were playing. Translating this into a classroom, I would be interested in assisting E-Sports-related extracurricular activities in the future. I know high school and colleges are beginning to form E-Sports teams of their own. (2-4 hours weekly) |
